Our School

Artsmark

As much as the school is committed to raising academic standards we firmly believe in the philosophy that all children should have the opportunity to take part in and experience "The Arts". We applied, via the Arts Council, to be considered for an Artsmark Award and were thoroughly delighted to be informed that, as a result of the experiences that we offer the children, we had been awarded the Artsmark.

Eco-Schools

The Eco-School council began in 2003, we introduced the council to address all kinds of environmental issues that arise in school and the wider community, such as establishing recycling bins for paper, compost and inkjet cartridges. The Eco-School council has 9 members, these are children from all classes voted for by their peers during election week.
We have already achieved the bronze status and have nearly completed the silver. The children love having the autonomy to decide which issues are focused on each term and involving the whole school.
We have been awarded "silver" Eco-School status and as a part of this award we were involved in a paper making day. The children were instructed through the process by our W.E.S.P. adviser. The activity was then used as a part of our literacy work when the children worked on the unit "instructional writing".

School Travel Plan
Following presentation of the Green Travel Plan Award by Julie Potter, a member of Shropshire County Council's School Travel Plan Team, we received a DfES Travel Plan Capital Grant which was used to purchase the wooden pupil / parent sheltered seating area.

Following this success we are committed to achieving the Silver Shropshire School Travel Plan Award by July 2007.
The aims of the School Travel Plan are:

  • Reduce car use on the school journey, by parents and pupils and staff ;
  • Achieve a greater number of trips by active and sustainable modes of travel;
  • Improve safety on the school journey;
  • Support healthier lifestyles.

The Objectives:

  1. To reduce the amount of traffic in the immediate vicinity of the school, by promoting “Park and Stride” from the Sun Inn. This may become a “Walking Bus”;
  2. To encourage car sharing amongst those who live at a distance from the school;
  3. To promote cycling for pupils for whom there is a safe route to school;
  4. To continue to try to promote the voluntary one-way system around the school to improve safety for pupils around the school site.

Walk to School Week

The week beginning 9th October 2006 is our "Walk to School Week". The children will be involved in activities throughout the week including the gathering of data related to how they have travelled to school during the week.

Shropshire Council's Voting Competition

In March 2004 we entered a competition organized by Shropshire County Council. The focus of the competition was to prepare a presentation explaining how we use the voting process in our school. The children who entered worked maturely to produce an excellent PowerPoint presentation.
